Implications for Coaching ?

The cumulative data above is from 256 games in tournament football

Three basic overall implications would appear to be as follows

  1. Scoring first gives your side a big advantage to winning the game and also not losing. Does your team’s style reflect the need to take the initiative and score the first goal?

  2. Almost half of all ‘ First Goals ‘ were scored from Set Plays . Thus would it make sense to spend 50% of ALL practice time practising attacking and defending at Set Plays ?

  3. Approximately 4 out of every 5 ‘ First Goals’ were scored within 20 seconds of regaining the ball through a combination of passes, dribbles, turns, crosses etc. What is your team’s efficiency in ‘transition’ when your team gain and lose possession of the ball.
